There are more than 36,000 deaths a year in the United States that are attributed to accidental falls. Accidents which, for the most part could have been avoided. As an expert witness for hundreds of personal injury cases due to falls, Dr. Arvid Osterberg illustrates through case studies and anecdotal references, the causes, cures, and precautions that we all need to be aware of. Our modern society, while making strides toward a safer environment, still has plenty of dangerous conditions when and where we expect consistency, regularity, and predictability. As he states, there is always “a hazard waiting for someone to find it.”

With straightforward language Dr. Osterberg interprets building codes and states how they have been misapplied or ignored resulting in serious injury or death. He offers practical recommendations and checklists as to how to better observe the physical environment, be aware of dangerous situations, and even common-sense techniques on how to fall (and land) to minimize personal injury. While calling attention to a serious and potentially deadly experience, Dr. Osterberg does so without becoming morose while adding interesting stories of his own journey.

Professor Osterberg’s book is a powerful contribution to improve the lives of so many people. It explains the convergence of falling, aging, and architecture. Personally, I have incorporated specific physical exercises for balance, core strength and getting down and up from the floor to reduce my chances of falling.
